Music, Math and Movement!

Introduction

Music has a magical way of sticking in children’s brains. When children sing, they’re using the language and music areas of the brain at the same time, which boosts attention, memory, and learning. Even better, when we add movement to songs, children get a full-body experience that helps the brain remember more. Research shows that when children move—especially crossing the midline (like touching the right hand to the left knee)—they activate both sides of the brain, which strengthens focus, memory, and understanding. This helps them remember words, follow simple patterns, and understand early math ideas. Songs make learning feel easy, fun, and successful for every child.

Gather Materials

  • Your singing voice (beautiful or otherwise!)
  • A little space to move

Note: Small parts pose a choking hazard and are not appropriate for children age five or under. Be sure to choose lesson materials that you feel are safe for your child and that you are comfortable letting your child use.

Activity

1. Pick a Song
Choose a simple song with actions or counting that your child knows well.

2. Sing & Move Together
Follow the motions as you sing.  Repeat the song several times. Children love (and need!) repetition. You’ll see anticipation grow each time: faster motions, more confident singing, and lots of giggles..

4. Change the Speed
Try slow, fast, whisper voice, or silly voice. This builds listening, attention, and self-control—plus it keeps the giggles coming.

Singing, moving, and counting together turns everyday moments into learning moments. With simple songs and playful motions, families can help children build strong early math skills—while sharing joy, connection, and a little bit of silliness along the way. Here's a list of songs to get you started:

  • Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
(Counting down one at a time)
  • Five Green and Speckled Frogs
